In May, 2006, the Haig-Brown Fly Fishing Association hosted the British Columbia Federation of Fly Fishers Annual General Meeting at the University of Victoria. The Association also hosted the BCFFF AGM at the same venue in 2002.

Passing the Rod

The 2006 meeting, held May 26-28, developed the theme, “Passing the Rod”, highlighting the current concern of the angling community in British Columbia over dwindling numbers of young people taking up this healthy pursuit. The meeting featured a Panel Discussion “Passing the Rod, the challenges associated with increasing youth awareness of fly fishing in the communities” that included panelists Denise Maxwell, Ian Muirhead, Gary Bettridge and Don Peterson. Other events included “Your Cast Analyzed” by Sage Casting Analysis Machine, presented by Ian Muirhead, a Federation of Fly Fishers Certified Casting Instructor, and a Flea Market for fly fishing equipment, with tables provided for member clubs.

The Dinner and Auction were presided over by Andy Sneddon, who introduced the Honourable Guest, author Van Egan of Campbell River, and James Tepoorten President HBFFA who entertained diners with his Fly Fishing Song Treasury. As is the custom at the AGM, dinner was followed with an auction; thanks to generous donations from members, clubs and sponsors in the recreational fishing sector, and some spirited bidding by those assembled, the auction raised almost $8000, once again helping to make the BCFFF AGM both enjoyable and profitable.

The event concluded with an entertaining day on the Cowichan River, hosted by the Cowichan Fly Fishers Club, that included a Fly Casting Tournament, Fishout, and a BBQ and Prize-giving.

The 2002 AGM also was a very successful venture. While the general program was similar to that of 2006, its special theme was a celebration of the life and legacy of Roderick Haig-Brown. To this end, a first-class exhibition was staged in the Maltwood Gallery of the University of Victoria, which attracted many people from Victoria, some of whom had little connection with fly fishing. Several members of the Haig-Brown family attended the dinner.

The symposium program featured renowned fly fishers, authors and fly tiers who helped both novice and veteran fly fishers improve their skills. Proceeds from the symposium were used to further conservation activities of the Haig-Brown Fly Fishing Association. Attendees were invited to participate in this outstanding two day event on the campus of the beautiful University of Victoria. The cost for the entire weekend was only $75 per person and children attended for free.Â
